PLAINSBORO, N.J. (November 4, 2015) — OncLive® is proud to announce that nominations are open for the 4th Annual Giants of Cancer Care awards. The Giants of Cancer Care program celebrates the achievements of leading physicians and researchers who have devoted their time, talent and resources to improving care for the many patients and their families affected by cancer.

“The Giants of Cancer Care award recognizes pioneers and innovators who have been selected by their peers for their remarkable achievements in oncology research and clinical practice,” said Mike Hennessy Jr., president of Intellisphere Oncology and Healthcare Specialty Group, part of the Plainsboro, N.J.-based Michael J. Hennessy Associates, Inc., family of businesses. “We are proud to have the opportunity to celebrate the dedicated efforts of these men and women.”

The Giants of Cancer Care awards honor individuals who have propelled the field of cancer care forward and established the building blocks for future advances. Through their contributions, these nominees have transformed cancer from a deadly disease into a story of hope, survivorship and, ultimately, cure.

“I am proud and delighted to officially open up the 2016 Giants of Cancer Care awards for nominations,” said Dr. Maurie Markman, president of the Medicine and Science Unit at Cancer Treatment Centers of America and chair of the Giants of Cancer Care Selection Committee. Dr. Markman has more than 20 years of experience in cancer treatment and gynecologic research at some of the country’s most recognized facilities. The Selection Committee includes an exclusive group of oncologists, clinicians and researchers. “If previous years are any indication, I look forward to reviewing many outstanding applications representing the leading edge of cancer care research and clinical practice.”

Among those recognized in previous Giants of Cancer Care awards are Dr. Bernard Fisher, breast cancer pioneer widely credited with bringing clinical trials and statistical methodology to breast cancer research; Dr. Bert Vogelstein, who discovered the molecular basis of colorectal cancer; and Dr. James Allison, whose seminal work pioneered the checkpoint blockade strategy that unleashes the body’s own immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells, which has ushered in the revolutionary new field of immuno-oncology.

In 2015, more than 1.6 million new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed in the United States — and nearly 590,000 people will die from the disease, according to the National Cancer Institute. The most common forms are projected to include breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, colon and rectal cancer, bladder cancer, melanoma of the skin, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and leukemia.

The nomination process is open to a national audience. The Selection Committee considers each final nominee’s body of work, including clinical impact, significant contributions and overall accomplishments, in order to select 12 honorees from eight tumor-specific categories and four specialty categories.

Nominations for the Giants of Cancer Care program will be accepted beginning Nov. 4 through March 11, 2016. Ballots may also be submitted at the 33rd Annual Chemotherapy Foundation Symposium being held Nov. 4 — 6 at the New York Marriott Marquis in New York City at the Giants of Cancer Care booth in the exhibit hall.
