Dr. Umamaheswar Duvvuri on Impact of Multiple Genetic Mutations in Advanced Thyroid Cancer

Umamaheswar Duvvuri, MD, PhD

Umamaheswar Duvvuri, MD, PhD, assistant professor of Otolaryngology (ENT) at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, talks about potential genetic signatures for locally advanced, well-differentiated thyroid cancers.

Through the use of next-generation sequencing, it was determined that advanced thyroid cancers are more likely to have multiple mutations than less advanced disease, explains Duvvuri.

Most commonly these advanced cancers seem to have a combination of a BRAF mutation as well as mutation of the promoter region of telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT). This may indicate that these two mutations together can cause more aggressive thyroid cancers to form, says Duvvuri.
