Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has earned the prestigious Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), a recognition that underscores the hospital’s commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care. The Bronze award to Roswell Park marks the cancer center’s second national award for nursing excellence so far this year, joining Magnet® Recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Established in 2003, the Beacon Award for Excellence recognizes healthcare units that achieve exceptional patient outcomes, foster an environment that promotes nursing excellence and ensure a supportive and safe work environment for their teams.

“This designation acknowledges the outstanding efforts of our critical-care nursing staff in delivering quality, evidence-based, patient-centered care to patients and their families,” says Andrew Storer, PhD, DNP, RN, NP-C, FAANP, Chief Nursing Officer and Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services and Nursing at Roswell Park. “It is a testament to the dedication of our team, whose unwavering commitment to clinical excellence and a patient-first approach is evident in the top-tier care they provide every day.”

The Beacon Award for Excellence honors units that consistently improve outcomes and align their practices with AACN’s six Healthy Work Environment Standards. Units meet rigorous criteria in the following areas: leadership structures and systems, appropriate staffing and staff engagement, effective communication, knowledge management, learning and development, evidence-based practices and outcomes measurement.

AACN President Jennifer Adamski, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC, CCRN, FCCM, praised the Roswell Park ICU team, saying, “The Beacon Award for Excellence recognizes caregivers in outstanding units whose consistent and systematic approach to evidence-based care optimizes patient outcomes. Units that receive this national recognition serve as role models to others on their journey to excellent patient and family care.”
