Nicholas A. Butowski, MD, director, Translational Research in Neuro-Oncology, University of California, San Francisco, discusses an early-stage study of convection-enhanced delivery of nanoliposomal irinotecan with real-time imaging. These findings were reported on at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuro-Oncology.

Imaging a patient during injection has two benefits: a physician can make sure the target is being hit and can also correct any problems that might arise. Prior studies have used convection-enhanced delivery, Butowski says, but have not paired it with real-time imaging.

In this phase I study, researchers sought out to prove safety of the method.

Butowski hopes to take the strategy to the next level, though, by enhancing the delivery and reducing cost.
