Deepak A. Kapoor, MD, president of the Large Urology Group Practice Association, chairman and CEO of Integrated Medical Professionals, PLLC, discusses the greater exposure to high-quality healthcare that is provided by the integration of ancillary services into community urology practices.

Many urology practices are now offering services, such as diagnostic, that have traditionally only been offered in a hospital setting. The state of Florida, Kapoor notes, has been a test case for the success of this system, due to its unique demographics.

Florida has a significant elderly and African American population, which are both groups with a greater than average risk of developing prostate cancer, Kapoor states. Moreover, the state contains a large Hispanic population, which is a group that tends to avoid proactive healthcare services, making accessibility to care a greater concern.

Overall, Kapoor explains, the fundamental idea behind an integrated urology practice is to provide high-quality healthcare services in a location that is more accessible to the community. Kapoor adds that services provided in hospitals can often be more expensive, inconvenient, and dehumanizing. In general, integrated urology practices in Florida have resulted in increased access to healthcare, Kapoor explains, which improves outcomes.
