Marcus Albertsmeier, MD, surgeon at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, discusses the effect of radiation therapy on local recurrence and overall survival (OS) for patients with soft tissue sarcoma.

The main treatment that is available for patients with sarcoma is generally surgery, Albertsmeier explains. In sarcoma, it is important to gain control over the tumor, which could be achieved by radiotherapy.

The problem is that the available evidence in the scientific community has never been clear as to whether radiotherapy, in addition to surgery, may improve the local control and the OS of these patients, states Albertsmeier.
