Daniel H. Galmarini, Chief Technology Officer/Director, Physics and Engineering, 21st Century Oncology, provides an overview of adaptive radiotherapy.

Though the process was simple in the past, Galmarini says, it is now possible to use imaging modalities to understand the actual delivery of radiotherapy.

A retrospective study showed that deviations between planning and the actual delivery of radiotherapy could effect both outcomes and cost. Adaptive radiotherapy, which can be used on any patient, can help control the course of treatment in order to meet what the physician prescribed.

Many institutions have been working on this type of treatment. Galmarini says 21st Century Oncology’s adaptive radiotherapy is unique because it can modify the true clinical workflow on every patient.
