John Moroney, MD, and Katherine Kurnit, MD, MPH, discuss the role of careful timing in successful clinical trials in gynecologic oncology. Although historically patients have been considered good candidates for trials when there are no standard therapies available, Moroney argues that the sooner an eligible patient can enter a trial the better because they will have the opportunity to derive the most benefit from the therapy. Kurnit emphasizes that the decision should be made as close to the patient’s treatment decision point as possible to account for the potential delay in initiating treatment that can come from enrolling in a clinical trial.
