Bastian Schilling, MD, University of Wuerzburg, discusses different types of ocular melanoma and the importance of distinguishing this subtype.

According to Schilling, it’s very important to distinguish uveal melanoma from other types of ocular melanoma. Today, researchers know on a genetic level that uveal melanoma is a different disease because there are oncogenic mutations that are not found with conjunctival melanoma, states Schilling.

This led to the conclusion that there are 2 types of ocular melanoma. Uveal melanoma has distinct clinical behavior and conjunctival melanoma which resembles cutaneous melanoma.
