Shalala says that the U.S. will have a shortage of primary care providers, but not if advance practice nurses are used properly. The more training that nurses receive, the more likely they are to fit into the new system. There will be a need, Shalala believes, involving doctors, nurses, physicians assistance, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals, to expand healthcare to 32 million Americans in an affordable way.
