Mario Germano Giuliani and Lisa Giuliani have made an extraordinary gift of $27.8 million to support research in multiple myeloma, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute announced today. It is one of the largest single gifts for multiple myeloma clinical research in Dana-Farber’s history.

“Lisa and I are honored to support Dana-Farber’s transformational work in multiple myeloma,” said Giuliani. “We feel a deep responsibility to help advance research that can reshape patient outcomes, with the hope of accelerating breakthroughs and bringing us closer to a future where multiple myeloma can be effectively cured for more patients, including those disproportionately affected by the disease.”

The Giuliani family’s gift to Dana-Farber will establish the Giuliani Family Fund for Myeloma Clinical Research to support an innovative clinical study under the overall direction of Paul G. Richardson, MD, Clinical Program Leader and Director of Clinical Research, Jerome Lipper Multiple Myeloma Center at Dana-Farber and RJ Corman Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and his team.

This pivotal investigator-led clinical trial, known as DETERMINATION 2, aims to define the next standard of care for newly diagnosed, transplant-eligible multiple myeloma patients. This will be done by evaluating how to best incorporate newer immunotherapies into treatment protocols earlier, with the hope that will be when they have the greatest potential to foster longer, healthier lives for patients. The trial will tailor treatment based on disease risk and response, while exploring more personalized care for all patients. Other funding sources will also support aspects of this clinical trial.

“We are profoundly grateful for this transformational and visionary gift from the Giuliani family, which will accelerate Dana-Farber’s efforts to improve outcomes for patients with multiple myeloma through a combination of practice-changing clinical research and therapeutic innovation,” said Richardson. “This incredibly generous support will help change the lives of people with multiple myeloma everywhere, with the trial providing a critical framework to make this clinical benefit a reality and successfully translate these findings into real-world practice.”

The gift will also establish the Giuliani Family Fund for Myeloma Therapeutic Discovery to provide catalytic seed support for laboratory research led by Constantine S. Mitsiades, MD, PhD, to advance new therapeutic approaches that can delay, prevent or overcome the development of resistance to existing therapies.

“This extraordinary gift will help prioritize promising therapies for multiple myeloma patients and significantly impact laboratory research,” said Mitsiades. “We appreciate the Giuliani family’s support and we’re looking forward to its indelible influence on future treatments for multiple myeloma.”

“The collaboration and work of Drs. Richardson and Mitsiades highlights Dana-Farber’s commitment to translating scientific discovery into better patient outcomes,” said Benjamin L. Ebert, MD, PhD, president and CEO of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. “Together, their work creates a continuous cycle of discovery, with laboratory insights informing clinical investigation and findings from patients helping to shape the next generation of scientific advances.”

The gift will also support Dana-Farber’s broader research mission, particularly in areas that have the potential to drive progress across a range of cancers.
