PLAINSBORO, N.J.--OncLive announced today that Hope S. Rugo, MD, of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) will serve as Chair of the Advisory Panel for the 2014 Giants of Cancer Care program. The second annual Giants of Cancer Care program, in 2014, will honor a new class of oncologists from across the globe for their innovative work in the treatment and diagnosis of cancer.

Only a few decades ago, a cancer diagnosis was associated with stories of fear and fatality. While a cancer diagnosis remains daunting today, many patients with cancer now have stories of hope and survivorship. In recognition of the remarkable progress in cancer treatment and care, this year, OncLive launched the “Giants of Cancer Care,” program to honor oncology specialists whose work has helped save, prolong, or improve the lives of patients with cancer. In-depth profiles of the winners of the 2013 Giants of Cancer Care awards will be featured in a special album that will be available this November.

As Chairperson of the 2014 advisory panel, Dr. Rugo will lead the discussion with the panel of eminent oncologists to identify annual award categories, refine the selection criteria, and guide the nomination and selection processes for the 2014 Giants of Cancer Care awards. Dr. Rugo will also serve as a public ambassador for the Giants of Cancer Care program, presiding over events and awards receptions in the coming year.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Rugo as the Giants of Cancer Care Advisory Panel Chair,” said OncLive Chairman and CEO Mike Hennessy. “We look forward to working closely with her as the Giants program continues to grow.”

Dr. Rugo is a medical oncologist and hematologist specializing in breast cancer research and treatment. A clinical professor of medicine, she joined the Breast Care Center after a decade at UCSF working in malignant hematology and bone marrow transplantation for a variety of diseases. Currently, Dr. Rugo serves as the Director of the Breast Oncology and Clinical Trials Program at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, where she is the principal investigator working toward improving the treatment of both early- and late-stage breast cancers.
