Anees B. Chagpar, MD, MBA, MPH, FACS, FRCS(C), professor of surgery, Department of Surgery, Yale School of Medicine, assistant director, Global Oncology, Yale Cancer Center, discusses the importance of taking proactive measures to prevent the spread of the novel 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19).

Patients with breast cancer who are immunosuppressed are at an increased risk of developing complications from the virus, says Chagpar.

Individuals should follow guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, practice good hand hygiene, stay home if unwell, avoid large crowds, and avoid contact with sick individuals, advises Chagpar. Additionally, individuals should contact a doctor if they develop a fever, chills, and cough.
