There is a balance between the necessity for screening and the overuse of health services, says Landi, but improving prevention is the ultimate goal.

Landi says that if genetic variance is put together into a polygenic risk score, the risk of melanoma can be predicted quite effectively, without the high cost of traditional screening techniques.
