Aparna R. Parikh, MD, medical oncologist, Massachusetts General Hospital, discusses liquid biopsies in gastrointestinal (GI) cancers.

In an effort to better understand acquired resistance to targeted therapies in GI cancers, investigators collected plasma via liquid biopsy at disease progression for next-generation sequencing of circulating tumor DNA.

Tissue biopsies may not capture the entirety of the tumor in terms of heterogeneity, says Parikh.
