Soyer says that targeted screening must be adopted in lieu of population screening. The people who should be screened for melanoma are those who are at a higher risk—people with a family history, or fair skin. Another important risk factor is the number of moles a person has.
At the end of the day, people who present with melanoma have an underlying genetic mutation, Soyer states.
