Dr. Soyer Discusses Screening for Melanoma

Peter Soyer, MD, academic dermatologist, professor, The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute, discusses screening for melanoma.

Soyer says that targeted screening must be adopted in lieu of population screening. The people who should be screened for melanoma are those who are at a higher risk—people with a family history, or fair skin. Another important risk factor is the number of moles a person has.

At the end of the day, people who present with melanoma have an underlying genetic mutation, Soyer states.
