Dr. Yardley on Treatment Considerations in Patients With Advanced Breast Cancer and Visceral Metastases

Denise Yardley, MD, senior investigator, Sarah Cannon Research Institute, discusses treatment considerations for patients with advanced breast cancer who have visceral metastases.

Patients with advanced breast cancer who have skin or nodal recurrence typically have more indolent disease progression, says Yardley.

Conversely, metastases in life-sustaining organs such as the lungs or liver are associated with more aggressive disease and poor prognosis, explains Yardley.

Bone-only recurrent disease or metastasis that is limited to locoregional soft tissue may not require immediate intervention. However, patients with metastases in life-sustaining organs require therapy to ensure they remain eligible for additional treatment, concludes Yardley.
