Welcome to OncLive On Air®! I’m your host today, Ashling Wahner.

OncLive On Air® is a podcast from OncLive®, which provides oncology professionals with the resources and information they need to provide the best patient care. In both digital and print formats, OncLive® covers every angle of oncology practice, from new technology to treatment advances to important regulatory decisions.

In today’s episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Lionel A. Kankeu Fonkoua, MD, a medical oncologist in the Department of Medical Oncology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

On June 27th, 2023, the Global Liver Institute hosted a webinar on Innovating and Advancing Research in Liver Cancers. Dr Fonkoua’s presentation, entitled Reducing Disparities in Clinical Research Trials, discussed the ways in which minority populations are affected by inequitable care, the importance of improving access to routine and specialized care and representation in clinical research, and the need to broaden initiatives aimed at reducing disparities beyond the institutional level.

In our exclusive interview, Dr Fonkoua discussed the ways in which common clinical trial enrollment criteria in oncology exclude patients from underrepresented groups, enrollment disparities that uniquely affect patients with liver cancer, and initiatives that Mayo Clinic is participating in to eliminate barriers to clinical trial enrollment.
