Dr. Pecora on Results from the Swedish PSA Study
Andrew L. Pecora, MD, FACP, CPE the Chief Innovations Officer, Professor and Vice President of Cancer Services at John Theurer Cancer Center on the results from the Swedish PSA Screening Study.
Dr. Pecora says the value of an elevated PSA is still trying to be determined in regards to offering men the proper option for care or, in some cases, no care and just routine follow-up. The large Swedish study has data that shows that based on a man's PSA at a younger age, it will be highly predictive of what their risk is later on in life of developing metastatic prostate cancer. The study shows that with proper testing early on, a man can avoid the need for many repeated testings and it appears can limit the testing under these circumstances to just three tests in a lifetime.
