Charles L. Sawyers, MD, Chair, Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program; Marie-Josee and Henry R. Kravis Chair, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, accepts the Giants of Cancer Care Award for his work in prostate cancer.

Sawyers says receiving the award was a complete surprise and he is both excited and honored to be in the company of the other recipients of the award.

Sawyers played a key role in the development of imatinib (Gleevec) and dasatinib (Sprycel), two drugs that together have transformed chronic myelogenous leukemia from a fatal cancer into one that is nearly always treatable. Sawyers is also Leading a team that uses a new approach in finding a potential drug to attack cancer cells that have become resistant to enzalutamide (Xtandi), a targeted therapy for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer.
