Dr. Hussain on the Importance of Next-Generation Sequencing in Prostate Cancer

Maha Hussain, MD, FACP
Published: Saturday, Mar 24, 2018

Maha Hussain, MD, FACP, FASCO, Genevieve Teuton Professor of Medicine, Deputy Director, Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, discusses the importance of next-generation sequencing in prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is very complex and adaptive, says Hussain, so it is critical that the community understands the molecular biology of the cancer. Clinicians must integrate clinical variables, pathologic findings, and molecular data to make an informed decision.

It is important to moleculary profile patients who present with prostate cancer, says Hussain, because on the surface level, many patients look similar. There is still progress to be made with next-generation sequencing, but having a comprehensive assessment of a patient’s tumor is imperative to personalizing care.
