There are still many challenges facing the field of head and neck cancer, explains Machiels. Head and neck cancer is mostly induced by tobacco and alcohol use, which adds many comorbidities for these patients.

There are ongoing trials with avelumab (Bavencio) combined with chemoradiation, which can possibly help improve the outcomes for these patients.
